Culture and art of the Italy is totally built on the Roman Empire which rule it for many years and this time period also brings revolution in the Italian food. The Italian food which we are eating today is comes from many years ago with continuous change. These changes add more flavors and variety in food of Italy.
We call Italian food as traditional food because it has been consumed locally and regionally for an extensive period of time. It is difficult to say about national food because Italy is big country which has long coastal area, plans and mountain regions. Each region has its own particular types of food although there are some stable foods which are some how eaten across Italy. We have divided traditional Italian food courts in three regions; they are north, central, and south region.
Northern Region: Northern Italian region which has Veneto, Emilia Romagna, and Liguria all have very different gastronomy. The traditional food is generally characterized with less use of olive oil, tomato, and pasta but now days this is of no means. This region has the countries highest living standard and diverse selection of foods and menus; for example, Bologna is famous for its Ragu, Pasta, Gerona’s noodles and pesto with the great veal. Risottos of Milan, soft shelled crabs and black rice from Venice. Turin for white truffles and cheese fondues. Fonduta is popular dish of Piedmont. There is a meat dish called Bollito Misto which is also eaten in this region. There are some more dishes that are popular in this region they are Polenta, Potato Gnocchi, Prosciutto, Spezzatino alla Pusterese, Lasagna al Papavero, Suf, Buseca, Trofie al pesto, etc.
Central Region: Central Italian region is world famous for cheeses, savory cured meats and rich tomato sauces grace and also the seafood because of two side coastal area. Tuscany, Umbria, Marche, Abruzzi, and Lazio are the main part of central region. Tuscany and the Marches make unique unsalted bread that is not eaten anywhere else in Italy. There main food is base on pasta and bread. Macaroni is popular in Abruzzi whereas Spaghetti and Rigatoni is more popular in Umbria. Egg Fettuccini is famous in Rome. Porchetta, vincigrassi, prosciutto, castagnaccio, prosciutto, strozzapreti, are some more used food dishes of this region.
Southern Region: Southern region produced most celebrated foods and wines from the ancient world. The sea is used to its fullest extent with all manner of seafood enjoyed from tuna to anchovies. The first pastas were made in the south, but they were preceded by the popular tomato, focaccia and pizza. Campania is also the birthplace of the modern Pizza. Cheese like Peccorino, Ricotta, caciocavallo are used in basic diet. Pizza siciliana, Pasta Puttanesca, Parmigiana di Melanzane, zuppa di vongole, Chitarra, Peperoncino, Brodetto, Maccheroni al forno, calzone are famous food variety of south.
We can say that Italy is land of traditional food in all over the Europe. It is also known as wine basket of the world. Now day’s traditional Italian food is available in every part of the world and consumed in large number.
